Ondaris

Communications, optics and photonics maths, sourced

Link budgets, path loss, bit error rates, Gaussian beams and fiber spans — each with the equation, its assumptions and its source.

A SCOPT Inc. application

Ondaris is a calculation workspace for communications, optics and photonics — for engineers, students, researchers, lecturers and technicians who need the number and the working behind it.

Enter your parameters once and explore the whole system. Change the frequency and the wavelength, path loss, antenna aperture, Fresnel radius and Doppler shift all follow. Drag along a curve to see how link margin falls with distance. Solve backwards for the range, aperture or bandwidth that meets your target.

66 calculators, in five groups

Every calculator states the model it implements, the assumptions it makes, the range over which it is valid, and where its expressions come from — the document and clause where there is one, and a stated derivation or measured fit where there is not.

Converters 5

Frequency and wavelength; W, dBm and dBW; ratio and decibels; VSWR, return loss and match; propagation delay.

RF & microwave 26

Free-space path loss, full link budget, microstrip line, Fresnel zone clearance, EIRP and power flux density, antenna gain and aperture, thermal noise, cascaded noise figure, receiver SNR and G/T, Shannon capacity, Doppler shift, rain attenuation, multipath fading, channel dispersion and coherence, phase noise to jitter, Allan deviation, canonical antenna patterns, uniform linear arrays with beam steering and grating lobes, the NBS Yagi designs, a rectangular microstrip patch by the cavity model, a pyramidal horn with its quadratic phase error, a parabolic reflector with its feed and the four efficiencies that set its gain, an axial-mode helix, RF exposure compliance boundaries to ICNIRP 2020 and their summation over several sources, and a Smith chart with L-network synthesis.

Link performance 7

Bit error rate for M-PSK, square M-QAM and on-off keying, receiver sensitivity from Eb/N0, fading channel capacity, the deterministic eye diagram, and how long a bit error rate test must run.

Optical 16

Photon energy and rate, refraction and reflection at an interface, laser diode, detector responsivity, optical receiver SNR, APD and optimum gain, optically preamplified and coherent receivers, Gaussian beams, micro-ring resonator, fixed and flexible DWDM grids, FSO link budget, and FSO scintillation, turbulence fading and pointing error.

Fiber 12

Power budget, V-number and guided modes, multimode modal bandwidth, mode field and joint loss, chromatic and polarisation mode dispersion, nonlinearity, four-wave mixing, OSNR of an amplified chain, and three measurements: dispersion fitted to group delay, OTDR splice loss, and OSNR on a spectrum analyser.

Every calculation shows its work

Tap through to the equation, what each symbol means, what the model assumes, where it stops being valid, and which document it came from. Export a PDF that carries all of it — so the person reading your report can check you.

How it works

Built for real engineering, not just a number on a screen.

Strict units

Enter GHz or MHz, dBm or watts, kilometres or feet. Everything is converted to SI internally, so the answer never depends on how you typed it.

Live recalculation

Change any input and the whole system updates instantly.

Interactive plots

Scrub a curve with the operating point marked and the threshold crossing stated.

Reverse solving

Set the answer you need and the input follows — on 62 of the 66 calculators.

Projects & scenarios

Share parameters across calculators and compare scenarios side by side.

Touchstone import

Drop a one-port .s1p file from a vector analyser onto the Smith chart — a measured sweep over the synthesised one.

Export

PDF, CSV, LaTeX, Python and MATLAB — carrying the assumptions, validity range and source clause with them.

Accessible

Built for screen readers and large text throughout: every control is labelled, text scales with your system setting, and charts are spoken, not just drawn.

Works offline

Every calculation runs on device. No account required. The only time Ondaris uses the network is to fetch the Pro price and to verify or restore a purchase, and that carries nothing that identifies you.

What it is not

Ondaris is a calculation bench, not a simulator. Its models state their assumptions, and are closed-form where one exists and computed numerically, with independent checks, where it does not. It does not do full-wave electromagnetics, ray tracing or end-to-end system simulation.

Each formula carries a review status and the limitations it was approved under, by SCOPT Inc. That is an engineering review by the publisher, not certification by any standards body or test house.

No advertising. No tracking. No chatbot. Just the arithmetic, done properly and shown openly.
