About this training
This specialized training provides a comprehensive understanding of optical turbulence and its impact on laser beam propagation through various turbulent media, including the atmosphere and underwater environments. Optical turbulence leads to phenomena such as beam spreading, scintillation, phase distortion, and wavefront degradation, which are critical to account for in high-precision applications like free-space optical communication, directed energy systems, LIDAR, and remote sensing. Participants will gain insights into mathematical models of turbulence, such as Kolmogorov and non-Kolmogorov models, and learn to evaluate beam propagation behavior under varying turbulence conditions. Mitigation techniques, analytical tools, and simulation methods will also be covered to support robust system design.
What you will learn
* Fundamentals of optical turbulence and its physical origins * Turbulence characterization: refractive index structure parameter ??2, coherence length, and Rytov variance * Beam propagation effects: beam wander, spreading, scintillation, and angle-of-arrival fluctuations * Analytical and numerical modeling of laser propagation in turbulent media * Comparison of atmospheric vs. underwater turbulence environments * Mitigation strategies: aperture averaging, adaptive optics, beam shaping * Tools for turbulence simulation and performance prediction * Application scenarios: optical wireless communication, laser targeting, imaging, and LIDAR
